Inaugural Sail GP in Halifax success in spite of inclement conditions

By CityNews Halifax Staff

Thousands of residents crowded the Halifax Harbourfront over the weekend to watch the first ever Rockwool Sail Grand Prix in Canada.

By all accounts, the inaugural event was a success in spite of some incredibly gusty and at-times rainy conditions on Sunday.

Great Britain earned the top spot on the weekend, with a pair of teams unable to even compete on the final day.

Due to high winds, SailGP announced a change to the expected format to the day because crews were unable to safely crane all ten F50s into the water ahead of racing.

As a result, a decision was made to prioritize teams in order of the event standings heading into Sunday leaving Switzerland and the United States out of competition.

Germany also missed out on the first race of the day but they did return in time for Fleet Race 5.

While the Canadian team, led by Phil Robertson, won the first heat of the day and held their own for most of the weekend, they did fail to secure a spot in the final race of the weekend.
