Crews are sharing more details of a busy weekend they had, where, on top of two chimney fires, they also responded to a dangerous dumpster blaze.
According to Halifax Professional Fire Fighters (HPFF), in a post on social media, on Saturday night, around midnight, teams from Stations 2 and 3 were called to a dumpster fire behind a downtown building on Hollis Street.
“While these incidents may seem routine, dumpster fires carry a significant risk,” the union said.
In these incidents, the “fire load” is high, meaning flames have a lot of material to consume, making the blaze hotter and bigger. Dumpsters are also located close to buildings, the union said, creating a demanding situation for crews.
In the Hollis Street incident, teams were able to knock down the blaze before it spread to the nearby structure.
Then the next day, on top of two chimney blazes, firefighters were sent to Frederick Avenue in Fairview. The report was for a structure on fire. While en route, teams were delayed by construction in the area, and a neighbouring station was sent to find the building on fire.
“An aggressive interior attack kept the fire contained to the room of origin,” HPFF said in the release.
Firefighters also rescued two dogs from the building.
