Halifax’s Ellie Black becomes first gymnast to compete at 4 Olympic Games

Ellie Black will represent Canada at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer.

The Halifax native will become the first artistic gymnast to compete at four Olympic games.

“I am thrilled to have qualified for the Canadian WAG Paris Olympic Games team. I feel a lot of pride and gratitude heading into my fourth Olympic Games. That is an incredible accomplishment,” said Black in a media release. “I wouldn’t be here without the support of my amazing team around me. I am excited to keep building with these girls and see what our team can do in Paris!”

The 28-year-old placed fourth in the balance beam final at Tokyo 2020, Canada’s best-ever finish in an Olympic artistic gymnastics event. Her 10 medals also make Black Canada’s most decorated gymnast ever at the Pan Am Games.

Black won’t be the only Nova Scotian joining the gymnastics teams in Paris this summer. Truro’s David Kikuchi will serve as a WAG coach, while fellow Truro native Martha Purdy will be WAG physiotherapist.

Lori Dithurbide of Grand Etang will be the WAG mental performance consultant.

The Paris Olympics will begin on July 26.
