Officials investigating a possible bear attack in Halifax area

Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables (DNRR) is investigating a possible bear attack that took place in Eastern Passage on Monday morning.

DNRR spokesperson Erin Lynch said a section of Shearwater Flyer Trail was closed from Bisset Road to Caldwell Road as staff investigated.

“We can confirm a person sustained injuries on the Shearwater Flyer Trail last night,” the department said in an update on Monday evening. “For privacy reasons, we cannot provide details on those injuries.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, staff will be setting some live traps,” Lynch said in an emailed statement. “Any bears caught will be checked for evidence. If there are none found on the bear, it will be released.”

There was no timeline for when the trail could reopen, according to the department.

The department went on to say it will provide updates once they become available, adding people are asked to contact DNRR if they see any concerning bear activity in their area.
