Andy Fillmore projected to be next mayor of Halifax

For the first time in 12 years, Halifax will have a new mayor.

Andy Fillmore, the former Liberal MP for Halifax, is projected to win the race for mayor.

Fillmore, 58, was elected with more than 40 per cent of the vote share, followed by Waye Mason at around 25 per cent. Pam Lovelace finished in third place.

“I couldn’t be happier and I have a certainty that there are great things ahead for HRM,” Fillmore told 95.7 NewsRadio on Saturday night, following a victory speech to supporters gathered at a pub in Halifax’s north end.

Fillmore said he plans to “hit the ground running” as mayor, and said he looks forward to working with some fellow new faces around the council table.

“I think it’s an opportunity, a new mayor and new faces around the table. We have a different set of challenges than we had 8 or 12 years ago and this is an opportunity to address those in a new and current way.”

A Halifax native, Fillmore grew up and attended university in the city where he was educated as a urban planner.

He was elected as Member of Parliament for Halifax in 2015, winning re-election in 2019 and 2021. Fillmore resigned his seat officially in August, 2024, to seek the mayoralty.

Fillmore will join several other newcomers to Halifax Regional Council, with a number of long-time incumbents not re-offering.
