For the second time this year, a Liberal MLA is leaving the party to join the reigning Progressive Conservatives.
Premier Tim Houston announced on Tuesday Northside-Westmount MLA Fred Tilley has crossed the floor to join the Tories.
“Fred is a leader who has earned the respect of his constituency of Northside Westmount,” Houston said in a media release. “With Fred as part of our PC Caucus we will have another member of our team focused on making things happen and building up Nova Scotia.”
Tilley was first elected in 2021 after spending years in leadership roles at the NCSS in Sydney. He wants to be part of a team that is “delivering for Nova Scotians.”
“The people of my community are at the centre of everything I do, and I see Premier Houston as a leader who extends the same respect to all Nova Scotians,” said Tilley. “Premier Houston and his government have been making things happen by being laser focused on healthcare and getting more access across Nova Scotia.”
In February, former Liberal MLA Brendan Maguire joined the Progressive Conservatives and was named Minister of Community Services by the premier.
Today’s news comes amid continued speculation that a provincial election call could soon be coming in Nova Scotia.
