The Halifax Mooseheads were back in action Saturday night, welcoming top goal scorer Justin Poirier and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar to the Scotiabank Centre for the teams’ first meeting of the year. Halifax is 1-1 on the current four-game homestand, defeating Rouyn-Noranda in a shootout on Nov. 1 and falling to the Moncton Wildcats on the 3rd.
Jérémy Leroux opened the evening’s scoring for Baie-Comeau, tipping in the puck to give the Drakkar an early 1-0 lead. Early in the third period, Daniel Walters tied up the contest for the Herd, finding his way past Drew Allison and firing the puck past goaltender Mathys Routhier. Baie-Comeau put themselves right back on top less than two minutes later, with Raoul Boilard beating Rousseau to break the tie on the powerplay.
Halifax coach Andrew Lord pulled Mathis Rousseau with about 1:25 remaining in the final period of play. Neither team was able to capitalize, and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar defeated the Halifax Mooseheads 2-1. With the loss at home, the Herd falls to 1-2 on the current homestand and 8-8-2 overall. The Baie-Comeau Drakkar improve to 13-5-1, having won their last six games.
Mathis Rousseau earned first star of the game with 28 saves in the losing effort. Second star went to game-winning goal scorer Raoul Boilard, and a third star was awarded to Daniel Walters with the lone Mooseheads goal.
Halifax will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. as they take on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, who have won nine straight games against the Mooseheads dating back to last season. You can listen in to the action on 95.7 NewsRadio with Garreth MacDonald.
