Halifax police ask for help identifying suspect in scam targeting seniors

Halifax Regional Police are warning residents about a scam targeting seniors in the region.

Police say they’ve received a number of reports about a scam where someone pretends to be a family member who says they’ve been arrested and are in jail.

Then a second person who says they are apart of the legal system joins the call and informs the victim they must pay to have their loved one released from custody.

In one case, a suspect made arrangements to pick up the money in person.

Police say if you receive a call like this, do not provide or confirm any personal or financial information and hang up the phone. In Canada, law enforcement and court officials will not show up at a home to collect bail money.

Police are now asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect who has been involved in at least five incidents where money was picked up in person.

Anyone with information about his identity or whereabouts is asked to contact HRP or Crime Stoppers.
