Mooseheads split series with Charlottetown; win at home

Halifax hosted the Charlottetown Islanders on Saturday night for the second half of a home-and-home series between the two teams heading into the winter break. Charlottetown won the first game Friday night at the Eastlink Centre, defeating the Herd 4-1.

Halifax came back with the win Saturday.

Mooseheads captain Brady Schultz opened the scoring 6:28 into the second period with an individual effort, storming down the right side before beating the Islanders netminder.

Toques rained down from the stands after Schultz’s goal as the Herd celebrated their annual toque toss night, where the fans throw toques, gloves and other winter accessories onto the ice after the first home goal and are then donated to charities across Nova Scotia.

Braeden MacPhee increased the Herd’s lead to two on the penalty kill as Lou Levesque charged into the offensive end, fighting off two defenders before finding MacPhee, who buried his third shorthanded goal of the year into the Charlottetown net.

The Islanders responded on the powerplay. Only seven seconds into the man advantage, Matthew Butler found Ross Campbell, who fired a shot past Mathis Rousseau, continuing Campbell’s dominance in the home and home series.

Lou Levesque put his speed on display late in the third as he turned on the jets, beating the Charlottetown defence, firing a backhand shot past the Islanders goaltender, and putting the game out of reach for Charlottetown.

The Mooseheads won at home in their last game before the winter break, defeating the Charlottetown Islanders 3-1. With the win, Halifax improves to 11-15-5, while the Islanders fall to 12-16-3.

The Herd swept the three stars. Mathis Rousseau claimed the first star with his 29 saves in the win. Lou Levesque earned the second star with the insurance goal and an assist, while Braeden MacPhee earned the third star with a goal.

Halifax will be back in action after the winter break on Saturday, Dec 28th in Acadie Bathurst at the Centre régional K.C. Irving to face-off against the Titan. Puck drop is 7 p.m., and you can catch all the action here on 95.7 News Radio.
