Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Cabot Trail and Highlands in Cape Breton, with up to 35 cm of snow forecasted.
The warning says hazardous conditions are to be expected, with wind gusts from the northwest reaching 90 km/h.
Snow and wind is expected to continue into Monday night. Blowing snow can create hazards on roads and drivers are reminded to remain cautious and do not drive unless absolutely necessary.
“Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Road closures are possible,” the warning states.
Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe weather are expected to occur together. The mix of snow and heavy winds classifies a storm warning.
Nearly 500 customers are without power in the northern reaches of Cape Breton. power is expected to be restored in the early hours of Monday morning.
South of Inverness and parts of the mainland are under a special weather statement with five to 10 cm of snow anticipated.
County Harbour and LaHave ferry services have been suspended until further notice.
