Nova Scotia Mounties issue warning about fake texts that appear to be from the RCMP

The Mounties in Nova Scotia are warning the public about a new texting scam that involves messages that appear to be from the RCMP.

Investigators say potential victims have reported receiving unsolicited text messages that claim to be an “RCMP Delivery Notice.”

The fake texts state that the RCMP were unable to deliver court documents and ask recipients to reschedule the delivery to avoid missing an urgent court date.

The text typically points to an internet link that leads to a rather convincing website that asks for personal information.

“Scammers have created what appears to be a legitimate notification that brings you to a convincing website,” Constable Mitch Thompson, of Commercial Crime Section, said in a press release. “Remember that the RCMP will never ask for your personal information via text or email.”

As well, the RCMP says government agencies should be contacted only through verified websites; the RCMP’s website is https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/.

Other was to protect oneself from digital scams include not responding to unknown phone numbers, avoiding providing personal information, and not clicking links for unverified sources.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of a phishing scam, or has information about these scams, is encouraged to contact their local RCMP or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
