Driver facing multiple charges after fatal car-pedestrian crash

Halifax Regional Police have now laid charges in a fatal car-pedestrian collision in Halifax’s South End.

On Monday evening around 5:45, police were called to the intersection of Robie Street and Veterans Memorial Lane after a report that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk.

When officers arrived, they learned that the driver of the vehicle had been involved in an earlier crash on Jubilee Road and, while fleeing that scene, hit a 21-year-old Halifax woman in the crosswalk.

The woman died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.  The driver was arrested at the scene.

Police on Wednesday announced that the driver, Deepak Sharma, 32, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face charges of:

  • Operation of a vehicle causing death
  • Driving while impaired, causing death
  • Failure to stop after an accident resulting in death
  • Failure to stop after an accident

Police indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and thanked the witnesses who remained at the scene Monday evening.
