SiRT clears Halifax police officer after suspect fractures foot

The province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no grounds to charge a Halifax Regional Police officer after a suspect suffered a fractured foot during an arrest.

The incident SiRT investigated involved an officer responding to a report of a domestic dispute at the shopping plaza at the corner of Hammonds Plains Road and Bedford Highway, where a woman was hitting a man and ripping off his clothes.

An officer later found the woman, and she ran away, jumping over a fence that had a 15-foot drop on the other side, which resulted in her fracturing her foot.

The next day, SiRT received the referral from Halifax Regional Police and launched its investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence that involves the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

SiRT concluded there were no reasonable grounds to charge the officer.
