Toll plaza removal work to close Mackay Bridge all weekend

Work to remove tolls plazas on the Halifax Harbour Bridges will move to the Mackay this weekend.

The bridge will be closed from Friday at 7 p.m. until Monday at 5:30 a.m.

“I think it’s slightly different than the Macdonald closure,” said HHB spokesperson Steven Proctor. “It’s a much more difficult project, so we’re bringing in much bigger equipment.”

Proctor says two large cranes will be used to lift the roofs off the plazas. Plans have also changed. Proctor says that rather than consecutive weekend closures to complete the work, debris will be left behind and cleaned up over the next month or so.

“Monday, the routing will be the same as it has been, but a large part of the debris will be in the central commercial area,” Proctor explained. “But the roadway will be clear and lanes will have temporary markings if the weather cooperates on Sunday.”

Another difference between the bridges is that commercial traffic is not permitted on the Macdonald, so they will need to go all the way around the Bedford Basin this weekend.

“We have extra enforcement on the Macdonald Bridge, we will be issuing tickets,” Proctor said of commercial vehicles that attempt to use the Macdonald this weekend.

Tolls were removed from the harbour bridges as of March 17. Proctor says while HHB hasn’t noted a large increase in traffic volumes since the toll removal, more tickets have been handed out for speeding.
