Gas prices drop sharply in Halifax as carbon tax is removed

There was a big drop in Halifax gas prices on Tuesday morning.

The Nova Scotia Energy Board, formerly known as the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, has lowered the minimum price of a litre of self-serve regular gasoline by 17.4 cents to 146.5.

The price of self-serve diesel also fell, now sitting at 161.2.

The drop is the result of the carbon tax being removed, which took effect today. As of last Friday, the price of gas was 163.9, while diesel was at 181.0.

Also now in effect is the provincial government’s promised HST cut.

The provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax has been reduced from 10 per cent to nine per cent, lowering the overall HST from 15 per cent to 14 per cent.
