The province is expanding a program to help people in historic African Nova Scotian communities gain title to their land.
The government says it is expanding community boundaries under the Land Titles Initiative to now match municipally defined boundaries.
Launched in 2017, the initiative provides legal and surveying support at no charge for people in North Preston, East Preston, Cherry Brook/Lake Look, as well as Lincolnville and Sunnyville in Guysborough County.
“These changes mean more people will be able to apply for the support they deserve,” said Twila Grosse, Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs. “This is about correcting historic inequities and ensuring families can keep, build, and develop on the land that’s been in their communities for generations.”
In the 1800s, Nova Scotia granted land to both white and Black Loyalists, but only white settlers were given clear titles, leading to problems for the descendants of Black settlers.
As of this month, a total of 421 land title migrations have been completed since the program’s launch.
