Nova Scotia teens have highest smoking rate in Canada, study finds

A new study looking at smoking rates across the country has found that one Maritime province has the highest rate in Canada.

The study, from Preszler Injury Law, found New Brunswick leads the country with an adult smoking rate of 15.8 per cent.

The national average, it says, is 10.9 per cent.

Nova Scotia, meanwhile, has an adult smoking rate of 12 per cent, placing it sixth among the 10 provinces.

However, in Nova Scotia, teens and young adults are identified as smoking more than their counterparts elsewhere.

The study says teens aged 15 to 19 in Nova Scotia smoke at a rate of 10.7 per cent. That is the highest rate in the country for that age group and significantly higher than the national average of 4.2 per cent.

In Nova Scotia, people aged 20 to 24 also smoke at a rate higher than that age group in other provinces.

Preszler Injury Law says the data for its study was collected from publicly available smoking rates.
