Windsor Street Exchange redevelopment back before Halifax council

The redevelopment of one of Halifax’s busiest intersections is back on the agenda at regional council.

A staff report coming to council Tuesday recommends that the municipality proceed with the current funding agreement for the Windsor Street Exchange redevelopment and use the existing design as an initial phase of the project.

The report also recommends biannual updates to council on the progress of the redevelopment, along with continued work on future design scenarios.

Earlier this year, council reversed a decision to scrap the current design, partly due to concerns over the potential loss of federal and provincial funding. Councillors rejected a design from staff in part because of a lack of dedicated transit lanes.

The original $47-million project had Halifax’s share at $10 million, with other levels of government covering the rest. That total has now increased to $150 million, with HRM making up the difference, bringing the city’s share to $53.7 million.

The Windsor Street Exchange sees 170,000 people pass through each day.
