How does your HVAC system affect the air you breathe?

By David DeRocco

In recent years, scientific research has highlighted how important indoor air quality is to our overall well-being. Surprisingly, the air inside our homes, offices and other buildings can sometimes contain more pollutants than the air outside. With most people spending up to 90 per cent of their time indoors, it’s a great opportunity to take simple steps to improve the air we breathe every day. By focusing on indoor air quality, we can create healthier, more comfortable spaces for everyone.

In light of these facts, it becomes clear that having an HVAC system operating at maximum efficiency is critical to ensuring a constant flow of pure, healthy air inside your  home or office. Heat pumps and (electric) furnaces act like the lungs of your home, filtering out pollutants that can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, dizziness, and other common maladies. Fortunately, you don’t have to be an HVAC technician to take the necessary steps required to ensure clean air flow.  According to Mark Mulhern of Wilsons Mechanical, there’s at least one very simple thing you can do to your HVAC system to immediately improve the air you breathe inside your home.

“Most people don’t consider their air quality, they’re only concerned about the heating and cooling process of a furnace or heat pump,” said Mulhern, lead installation and service technician with Wilsons Mechanical. “Both are circulating air all the time. If you don’t filter it  your equipment becomes dirty. When your filters get plugged it costs you more money to operate the system and it could lead to break downs and compromise the quality of the air.”

According to Mulhern, replacing the filter in your furnace or heat pump is much like replacing the filter inside your vehicle.

“I grew up in the 70s and 80s when cars didn’t have cabin filters,” he said. “If you take your vehicle into the shop for maintenance now, they always talk to you about the value of replacing your cabin air filter. It’s very similar to the value of replacing the filter inside your home. The evolution of people thinking about the quality of air they’re breathing and exchanging continues.”

Mulhern suggests that replacing an air filter is just part of the necessary preventative maintenance required to keep your furnace or heat pump at peak performance.

“As a general rule, most manufacturers recommend a full-service inspection at least once a year on a heat pump system,” he said. “For your heating and cooling system, you might want to book service in spring and fall before and after the season changes. If

you’re comfortable changing filters, you should at least do that once every three months. We have customers that buy a box of filters and change them every month, especially if they have pets. That’s a smart way to ensure your air is being thoroughly filtered.”

Wilsons Mechanical has deep roots in the area, starting in Halifax over 100 years ago. The company has built a strong reputation across the Maritimes by providing expert service and professional heat pump and furnace installations.
