The Halifax Mooseheads wrapped up their six-game homestand with a 5–3 victory over the Cape Breton Eagles on DND Appreciation Night at Scotiabank Centre.
Will Bent opened the scoring for the Mooseheads on the power play at 17:13 of the first period, sliding a rebound off Quinn Kennedy’s shot past Félix Hamel. Malik L’Italien picked up an assist on the play.
Jasu Mensonen doubled Halifax’s lead early in the second period, taking a pass from Oleg Kulebiakin and firing a shot from the right faceoff circle into the net. Caylen Blake made it 3–0 at 9:41, skating up the right wing, fighting off an Eagles defender and tossing the puck on net, where it found its way past Hamel.
Cape Breton responded with two quick goals to end the frame. Lewis Gendron got the Eagles on the board, squeezing a puck past Jack Cirka, and Samuel Rocca followed up with a sharp-angle shot that beat the Mooseheads netminder.
Kulebiakin scored back-to-back goals in the third period to restore Halifax’s three-goal lead. He struck first at 2:15, firing a shot that deflected off a defender’s stick and slid into the net. Then, at 10:29, he blasted a shot from the blue line that bounced off the end boards, ricocheted off Hamel and crossed the goal line.
Roman L’Italien scored with 5:51 remaining in regulation, but the Eagles couldn’t complete the comeback.
With the win, the Mooseheads improved to 8-4-0 on the season.
Kulebiakin was named the game’s first star with two goals and an assist. Mensonen earned second-star honours with one goal and two assists. Eagles forward Gendron was named third star.
