Youth charged for bomb threat at Halifax Shopping Centre

Regional police have charged a youth in connection with a bomb threat at Halifax Shopping Centre over the weekend.

On Saturday at roughly 4:10 p.m., officers responded to a bomb threat at the mall, where staff reported that a youth entered a store, handed someone a note saying they had a bomb, and then immediately left.

Police said security began evacuating the mall immediately.

According to HRP, officers found and arrested the suspect on scene and determined the threat was unfounded.

A 13-year-old youth is scheduled to appear in Halifax youth court at a later date to face a charge of mischief.

This was just one of 664 calls for service over the weekend, police detailed.

Another high-profile incident led to a man being charged with multiple offences.

On Sunday, police were told of a robbery at a Sobeys in Dartmouth. At around 5:45 p.m. a man entered the store, demanded money from the cash register and threatened them with a knife.

“The man was unsuccessful in getting any money from staff and left the store,” police said.

When officers arrived, they found a man slashing tires in the parking lot.

As a result, Jonathan Richard Comeau, 53 is facing charges of:

  • Attempted robbery
  • Assault with a weapon (x2)
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace
  • Failure to comply with conditions of release order
