Cataractes top Mooseheads 3-1 to open Quebec road trip

It was a tough return for the Halifax Mooseheads who opened a three-game Quebec road trip against the Shawinigan Cataractes in the teams’ first meeting of the season.

It was a battle of homes for goaltender Owen Bresson, who spent last season with the Cataractes before being acquired by the Mooseheads in the off-season. It was also the return of forward Quinn Kennedy, who was back in the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for fighting.

Halifax opened the scoring at 12:42 of the first period as Shawn Carrier continued his strong play, firing his 26th goal of the season past Shawinigan netminder Mathys Fernandez after taking a pass from Oleg Kulebiakin. Kennedy picked up the secondary assist for his first point since returning to the lineup.

The Cataractes tied the game in the second period when Cole Chandler pounced on a loose puck and beat Bresson at 12:54.

Shawinigan took its first lead of the night at 16:32 of the third period as Frédéric Bergeron buried a shot past the Halifax goaltender. The Mooseheads pulled Bresson for an extra attacker at 17:18, and moments later Chandler scored his second goal of the night into the empty net to seal a 3-1 win for the Cataractes.

With the loss, Halifax falls to 20-19-3-2 on the season.

Shawinigan defenceman Julien Lanthier was named first star of the game with an assist. Carrier earned second star honours with the lone Mooseheads goal, while Chandler was the third star after scoring twice.

Halifax returns to action Saturday, continuing its road trip against the Victoriaville Tigres at the Colisée Desjardins.

Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. You can hear all the action live on 95.7 NewsRadio with Garreth MacDonald.
