Mooseheads upended by Cape Breton

Less than 24 hours after their matchup in Cape Breton, the Halifax Mooseheads returned to the Scotiabank Centre to host game two of their weekend series with the Eagles.

Cape Breton opened the scoring 2:49 into the first period as Reece Peitzsche fired the puck past Nick Cirka while shorthanded. Connor MacPherson tied the game in the dying moments of the first period, taking a pass from Shawn Carrier and tapping the puck past Eagles netminder Connor Towle.

Raoul Boilard and Jacob Hartlin both scored in the second period to give Cape Breton a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame.

In the third, Lewis Gendron scored on the power play at 6:41 to extend the Eagles’ lead to three. Carrier brought Halifax back within two at 14:37 as Samuel Rousseau found Carrier in front of the Cape Breton net, who buried it past Towle. But with an empty Mooseheads net, Peitzsche added his second of the game to secure a 5-2 win for the Eagles.

With the loss, Halifax falls to 22-22-3-2 on the season.

Gendron earned first star of the night for Cape Breton with a goal. Second star honours were awarded to Carrier with a goal and an assist for the Mooseheads, while third star went to Peitzsche with a pair of goals.

The Mooseheads continue their three-game homestand on Thursday, Feb. 12, as they host the Shawinigan Cataractes at the Scotiabank Centre

Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on 95.7 NewsRadio, with Garreth MacDonald hosting the pregame show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
