Mooseheads edged 3-2 in overtime by Voltigeurs

The Halifax Mooseheads were back in action on Sunday afternoon as they hosted the Drummondville Voltigeurs at the Scotiabank Centre in the two clubs’ first meeting since the opening round of last year’s playoffs, where the Mooseheads advanced in a dramatic Game 7.
Halifax was once again without star forward Quinn Kennedy, who served the final game of his two-game suspension for fighting on Thursday, Jan. 22, against the Cape Breton Eagles.
The Herd opened the scoring after just two shots on the Drummondville goal and 1:59 of game time, as Shawn Carrier fired a shot from the right-wing faceoff circle past the pad of Voltigeurs goaltender Jan Larys.
Caylen Blake extended the Halifax lead to 2-0, taking a pass from Jasu Mensonen, skating around a defender and ripping a shot past Larys. Drummondville’s Owen Keefe cut the Mooseheads’ lead to one at 14:28, banking a puck past Owen Bresson.
Tempers boiled over at 7:50 of the second period as Carrier and Matteo Rotondi got into a wrestling match after the whistle. Both players received offsetting roughing penalties. It appeared that William Dumont tied the game for the Voltigeurs in the final minutes of the period, but Bresson made an exceptional pad save while taking contact to deny the scoring chance.
Drummondville tied the contest 2-2 at 3:24 of the third period as Maxime Lafond beat Bresson to force overtime. Carlos Händel left the ice and went to the locker room with 13:50 remaining, favouring his shoulder, but he later returned.
In the extra frame, Marc-Olivier Beaudry completed the comeback for the Voltigeurs as they defeated the Mooseheads 3-2.
With the loss, Halifax falls to 20-18-3-2 on the season.
Carrier was named the first star of the game for the Mooseheads. Blake earned second star, and Drummondville’s Larys was awarded third star.
Halifax returns to action Friday, Jan. 30, in the first of a three-game Quebec road trip when they face the Shawinigan Cataractes at Centre Gervais Auto.
