Mooseheads win season series against Eagles

An overtime goal by Oleg Kulebiakin propelled the Halifax Mooseheads to a 3-2 win over the Cape Breton Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Centre 200 in Sydney. With today’s win, the Herd claim the season series over their provincial rival with a final record of 5-3.

Halifax opened the scoring at 5:56 of the first period. Brandon Espenell started the play driving his way along the boards and behind the Eagles’ net before sending a pass to Lincoln Waugh at the blueline.

Waugh fired a shot on goal that Liam Kilfoil got a touch on before Quinn Kennedy buried the rebound past Cape Breton netminder Félix Hamel. The Eagles responded on the power play at 10:32, as Noah Jettelson floated a puck on the Mooseheads’ goal. Reece Peitzsche knocked at it before Lucas Romeo found the back of the Halifax net.

After a scoreless second period, Cape Breton took a 2-1 lead 1:26 into the third period as Lewis Gendron beat Owen Bresson. Connor MacPherson tied the contest at 15:17 for the Mooseheads, diving into a pileup in front of the Eagles goal and poking the puck past Hamel to force overtime.

In the extra frame, Jasu Mensonen found Kulebiakin who powered his way up the ice, past the Cape Breton defense and slid the puck through the pads of Hamel to claim the victory.

With the win, Halifax improves to 27-27-3-3 on the season.

Romeo earned first star of the match for the Eagles with a goal. Second star was awarded to Samuel Rousseau while Hamel was awarded third star with 26 saves.

The Mooseheads are back in action Friday, Mar. 13 for a weekend series matchup against the Saint John Sea Dogs at TD Station.
