Early spring snowfall causes some school closures in N.S.

Spring may have sprung, but the snow is still falling.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for much of the province, with some regions expected to receive 10 to 15 cm of snow.

The storm has caused the closures of some school districts around Nova Scotia.

South Shore Regional Centre for Education says it has cancelled classes today, while all schools in Shelburne County remain closed as well in the Tri-County Region.

Schools in Yarmouth and Digby remain open.

Strait Regional Centre has announced three school closures, while saying several others will have early dismissal at 12:30 p.m. on Monday due to the weather.

Snow started to fall along the southwestern shore Sunday afternoon and moved towards Halifax by the evening. The system was forecast to continue moving up the Atlantic coast, reaching Cape Breton by mid-morning Monday.

The weather agency says snow is expected to be wet and heavy, and temperatures will remain near the freezing mark.

“There is some uncertainty as to where the heaviest snowfall will occur as snow may transition to or mix with ice pellets or rain along parts of the coast during the day on Monday,” Environment Canada says.
