Lengthy lockdown at Springhill Institution lifted, visitors can return

A nearly two-week-old lockdown at a Nova Scotia prison has finally ended.

The lockdown began on March 15 after three inmates were assaulted at the medium security federal institution in Springhill.

According to a release from Correctional Services Canada on Friday, the prison has now resumed operations and visitors can return.

The injured inmates were sent to an outside hospital to receive treatment but have since returned to the instution, while the alleged assailants were identified.

CSC says “appropriate actions” have been taken but few other details were provided.

The federal agency says the lockdown has lifted and a search by investigators has been completed.

CSC says that search uncovered contraband and unauthorized items that included homemade stabbing weapons.

The agency says it works with police agencies to take action against those with contraband in correctional institutions.
