Largest science ship in Coast Guard fleet comes to Halifax

Officials in Halifax have welcomed the Canadian Coast Guard’s latest ship to the harbour.

On Tuesday, the CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk entered service, with dignitaries on hand to celebrate its arrival in Halifax.

Built at shipyards in Vancouver, the CCGS Naalak Nappaaluk becomes the largest science vessel in the Coast Guard fleet and will support science missions off the Atlantic coast.

“This science ship stands as a testament to Canadian innovation, skilled shipbuilders, and the National Shipbuilding Strategy’s long-term vision,” says David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence. “We are investing in both the future of ocean research and the resilience of coastal communities that depend on healthy seas.”

The Naaluk Nappaaluk will dock at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth and serve as under the guidance of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

The data and samples collected onboard this vessel will advance Canada’s domestic and international commitments to advance the sustainable management of our oceans.

It is named after a well-respected Inuk Elder from Kangiqsujuaq, Nunavik, who devoted his life to preserving his language, culture and traditional knowledge.

“Not only did he possess life-saving knowledge about the land, the sea, the weather and the night sky, he was committed to ensuring that knowledge was preserved for future generations,” Natan Obed, President, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, said.
