N.S. surgical wait times ranked among best in Canada: Report

New figures show the province’s health authority is among the best in the country at reducing surgical wait times.

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information’s report, Nova Scotia Health was ranked in the top three or better in four categories.

The report, released Thursday, says the province was second place for hip replacements with 77 per cent of surgeries completed within the 182-day benchmark.

Nova Scotia also ranked second place for knee replacements with 69 per cent of surgeries completed within the 182-day benchmark, which is above the national average of 63 per cent.

When it comes to cataract surgeries, the province ranked in second place with 77 per cent of surgeries completed within the 112-day benchmark, while it ranked third place for hip fracture repairs with 87 per cent of surgeries completed within the 48-hour benchmark.

Nova Scotia Health says the province also saw an increase in the number of bladder cancer surgeries, CT scans and MRIs, which were up more than 20 per cent compared to 2019.
