A yellow warning for heat was issued at 10:45 a.m. on August 8 for Halifax, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees, feeling like 38.
Conditions are expected improve for some northern and eastern areas tonight, but elsewhere warning level temperatures and Humidex may persist through the weekend across the western mainland. Lowest temperatures will not drop below 19 degrees, and the heat is expected to continue through the weekend.
Residents are advised to protect against heat-related illness, especially those at greater risk like older adults and those living alone.
Monitor for the early signs of heat exhaustion: signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.
Use air conditioning, drink water often and limit sun exposure to protect from heat-related sickness.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 or your emergency health provider if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke which can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness. Try to cool the person down by removing clothing and applying ice to the body while waiting for help.
