Councillor proposes banning campaign contributions from developers

An HRM councillor is proposing that developers be prevented from making campaign donations in municipal elections.

The motion from Brad Johns asks council to ask the province to have the elections rules changed.

Johns tells News95.7 it’s a proactive move.

“I think that a majority of what we do on a day-to-day basis here, a large percentage of that is directly related to development,” said Johns. “Somebody could come forward and make a suggestion that a particular councillor did or did not vote a particular way because of a contribution that they took during an election time.”

The motion will be debated at City Hall next Tuesday.

The next municipal election is in October 2012.
