The commander of the RCMP in Nova Scotia is apologizing after a report that a Mountie left a voice mail message making light of a woman’s domestic assault complaint.
RCMP Chief Superintendent Brian Brennan said when he heard the comments, his thoughts immediately turned to victims of domestic violence.
“The RCMP has zero tollerance for this type of behaviour,” said Brennan. “The comments were unprofessional, unacceptable and insensitive, and as the commanding officer I was extremely disappointed.”
Joanne Bernard, Nova Scotia’s minister responsible for the Status of Women Act, believes the incident is a case of “a couple of bad apples.”
“It just underscores the need for more cultural change and attitude change within the systems that are set up to help women leaving violence,” explained Bernard.
Brennan said an internal investigation is underway and the domestic assault case has been assigned to another officer.
