Snow, freezing rain expected from spring storm

There’s good news and bad news about the weather today.

The bad news: there’s up to 25 centimetres of snow in the forecast.

The good news: it’s in Moncton’s forecast.

A looming spring storm has prompted a snowfall warning for parts of New Brunswick and a winter storm watch for Prince Edward Island.

A low pressure system near the great lakes is moving east and will lie over the Maritimes by Thursday morning.

Meterologist Trevor Adams says the system will bring warm weather and mixed precipitation.

“We’ll see a warm front that will push colder air out, but as it does, it’s first going to cause the possiblity of some snow, ice pellets and freezing rain before changing over to rain as temperatures warm up,” he said.

While PEI is bracing for some snow and freezing rain, New Brunswick is expecting up to 25 cm of snow by Thursday morning.

Most of Cape Breton is also under a winter storm watch, with snow expected late this afternoon before changing to ice pellets and freezing rain.

“We’re also going to see some strong east, southeast winds that could cause some reduced visibility at times,” said Adams. “It’s likely that we’ll pick up anywhere from 5 to 15cm of mixed precipitation and then you could add in a couple of millimetres of rain on top of that.”

Adams says conditions won’t start to improve until late tonight.
