Environmentalist David Suzuki visits Halifax this weekend

David Suzuki is bringing his Blue Dot Tour to Halifax.

The Canadian environmentalist and TV-personality is campaigning across Canada, trying to pressure the federal government to add environmental rights to the constitution. He says Canadians have a right to clean water, fresh air and healthy food, and he wants the government to recognize those rights.

Suzuki told The Sheldon MacLeod Show what his tour is all about.

“This is about establishing, at the grass roots level, our beliefs and values, so that then our so-called leaders will follow our initiative,” he said. “We’ve got to be the leaders as civil society.”

When asked about Pictou County’s North Pulp Mill, Suzuki said that the balance between economy and ecology is broken.

“We talk about the number of jobs, and the value of the products that are coming out, and all of the benefits to society economically, but the environmental aspects are always regarded as a pain in the neck,” he said.

Suzuki, 78, said this will likely be his last tour. Canadian musicians will be backing him up across the country.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, Suzuki will speak at the Rebecca Cohn, with Joel Plaskett and Jenn Grant playing alongside him. And on Friday, Sept. 26, Suzuki and the Ecology Action Centre are hosting a “family-friendly afternoon celebrating the revitalization of Halifax’s Harbour” at Point Pleasant Park.
