SiRT clears police in incident where man arrested for public intoxication injured

The province’s Serious Incident Response Team has cleared police in an incident where had to be taken to hospital after he suffered cracked or broken ribs in police custody.

In July, a 45-year-old man was arrested after police say they saw him walking along Old Enfield Road with an open can of beer.

They say he was clearly intoxicated

According to the report, while in a cell at the Enfield RCMP detachment he became aggressive and started kicking towards to officers, and he was injured when he was taken down by one of the officers.

SiRT determined police had the right to arrest the man and use force to protect themselves.

Video evidence was used in the investigation.

The report says the man doesn’t remember what happened at the time he was injured, and he has since written a letter of apology.
