Acadia student in critical condition after drinking too much

A 19-year-old Acadia University student is in critical condition in hospital following a hard night of drinking. The young man was found unresponsive in a residence early Tuesday morning.

“From our point of view, I mean, we’re certainly concerned, disheartened. But, not surprised,” says Injury Free Nova Scotia Executive Director, Shirley Ann Rogers. “This is a huge issue amoung youths in our province, the over consumption of alcohol.”

Rogers says unfortunately, this is a regular occurrence among university and even high school students.

“So it’s not rare, that’s the unfortunate thing,” she says. “It takes these sorts of incidents for people to even have it on their radar that it’s an issue.”

Injury Free Nova Scotia has launched an awareness campaign targeted at youths. Part of it is a Youtube video called “There’s no such thing as a Magic Goat”.

“It’s this whole preposterous idea that somehow we’re not accountable for our actions and that there’s some way to somehow get a do-over if you make a mistake with drinking,” she says.

There has been no update on the student’s condition.
