Some schools closed to clean up roof leaks caused by Sunday’s storm

Roof leaks have closed some schools in the Halifax Regional School Board today after a rainy Sunday caused flooding all over the city.
And all that water is going to freeze.
News 95.7’s meteorologist, Richard Zurawski says we got a bit of snow, but the rain was the real issue.
“We got about 10 cm of snow, 12 cm of snow, not too much, it was more insult to injury; we did get about 30 mm of rain, however,” he said. “That really was the kicker in everything, that we ended up getting that much rain. The melt gave us probably an additional 20 mm water equivalent, and of course we had floods all over the place.”
Darrin Natolino with the city’s winter works department says they were getting up to 25 calls an hour about flooding yesterday.
The city enforced the overnight parking ban Sunday night to try to widen the roads.
But ice will be the problem as the temperature drops Monday night.
“We’re going to get a bit of a flash freeze,” Zurawski said. “Temperatures overnight will beign to plummet down to about minus 20 for the overnight low and with the wind, it’s going to feel like about minus 30.”
Zurawski says we can expect warmer temperatures on Wednesday, when the temperature will rise to three of four degrees.
The following schools are closed today:
-Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea Senior Elementary (3-5)
-Colonel John Stuart Elementary
-St. Joseph’s-A. MacKay Elementary
-Astral Drive Junior High
-Prince Andrew High School
-Seaside Elementary
-JL Ilsley High School
-The EXCEL program at Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea that normally operates out of the Senior building will operate from the Junior building for P-2 students on Monday morning.
-Halifax Christian Academy’s Early Childhood Centre in Timberlea is also closed today due to flooding
-Annapolis Valley Regional School Board says there will be an early dismissal of 9 a.m. for Berwick and District School school because of oil smell, buses will depart Apple Dome at 9 a.m.
