Wet, blustery conditions will mean a challenging commute in metro today.
Wind and rainfall warnings remain in effect for metro and parts of Nova Scotia as a low pressure system barrels into the Maritimes.
Nova Scotia Power is dealing with several outages across the province’s southwest, which at the peak affected more than 14,000 people. The weather is blamed for all the power losses.
In metro, meterologist Richard Zurawski says we’re getting wind gusts of up to 90 km an hour – and that’s not all we can expect.
“There’s going to be localized flooding, driving rain, buffeting wind and the potential for hyroplaning on the roads out there,” he said.
The Bridge Commission has closed the MacKay Bridge to high-sided vehicles, while pedestrians and cyclists are being asked to use a shuttle service to cross the MacDonald.
Outdoor activities at the Waterfront Winterfest scheduled for today have been postponed until Saturday. Indoor activities will take place as scheduled.
Zurawski says the low pressure system will continue to batter metro for another 24 hours.
“By the afternoon we’ll be at the height of the storm and it’s going to continue this evening and gradually taper off after midnight,” he said.
Zurawski says coastal residents should brace for some big waves and coastal erosion.
