Weather fracas in Friday’s forecast

Another storm is tracking towards the Maritimes, and it’s expected to bring nearly conditions nearly identical to those that hit the region exactly one week ago.

In a special weather statement for Nova Scotia, Environment Canada says snow is expected to begin over
western portions of Nova Scotia Friday morning.

Several hours of snow is expected before changing to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain, then finally
changing to rain.

Ten centimetres of snow is expected for most regions.

Last Friday, a mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain brought rush hour traffic to a halt across HRM.

News 95.7 meteorologist Richard Zurawski says this storm will be a clone of last week’s.

“It sounds exactly the same,” he said. “It looks like it’s going to be starting in the morning, beginning with flurries, and that will continue into the afternoon. Once it gets to the freezing mark we’re looking at ice pellets and freezing rain and it will switch over to rain.”

In the aftermath of last week’s storm, HRM snow clearing crews were criticized for a slow response.

Zurawski says he can’t advise crews on how to clear the roads, but assures them that the conditions last week are identical to those expected this Friday.

“It’s not going to be pleasant travel, especially in the afternoon. The go-home drive is going to be very difficult, any way you look at it,” he said.

“Travel is going to be a mess, especially tomorrow afternoon as we get in between that rain-snow line. Everything will get slushy and mushy.”

Winds are expected to be from the southeast, gusting up to 60 km/hr.
