A minor hockey association is warning parents to be on the lookout for a man who encouraged a young boy to visit a website known to be used by internet predators.
The West Hants Minor Hockey Association sent a letter to parents last week after the man approached a 12-year-old boy at the New Port District Arena in Brooklyn after practice on Monday.
The atom player was approached by a man when he was coming off the ice and heading to the players’ dressing room. The man is described as being between his late 30s and early 40s.
The boy told his parents about the encounter and his parents checked out the suggested website. Then they called police.
President Greg Kelley calls the incident is “unsettling” and “brazen.”
Omegle.com touts itself as a “talk to strangers” website where users can text or use live video streaming to communicate anonymously. Anyone under the age of 13 is not allowed to use the site.
Kelley tells the Chronicle Herald all parents and arena managers involved with the association have been alerted and asked to report any unusual incidents.
He said the case shows everyone needs to be vigilant, because this kind of thing could happen anywhere there’s a “gathering” of kids.
RCMP say they’ve had no other reports of similar cases, and believe the incident is isolated.
