It’s a weekend to don the blue and white and head down to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church and Community Centre on Purcells Cove Road for Greek Fest!
The festival kicked off Thursday night, but the weekend is when things really start to ramp up with music, dancing and of course the food.
If you’ve never been before, the president of St. Georges Orthodox Community in Halifax George Nikolaou explains what you’re in for.
“There are dance performances throughout the day from different regions of Greece, and different time periods of Greece,” he begins. “We have a Greek band that’s in from Toronto, and we obviously have a beautiful church and an exhibit room upstairs as well.”
Vasili says the event helps bring everyone together.
“You go downtown but there’s really not a bar where you can hear Greek music and dance and I find that’s one of the things I really look forward to,” he explains.
He hopes people will learn something this weekend while they’re having a good time.
“Everything here is amazing, the food, the dance, it’s awesome because we get to give everyone a taste of what our community is about hopefully they come here and enjoy themselves,” says Vasili.
Eleni tells News 95.7 her favorite part of the weekend is the dancing, but she admits she’s one of the dancers, so she could be a little biased.
It was an exciting start to party with Greece and Poland kicking off Eruo 2012 Friday afternoon.
Greek fans were glued to the TV in the main hall and Eleni says that’s just one more thing that makes the weekend so special.
“We’re already together but on top of it, it brings us even more together and it’s nice to see us watching the game as a community,” she says.
The game ended in a tie, but that didn’t seem to bring down spirits too much with a lot of people saying nothing could ruin their weekend – although a win would have made it that much sweeter.
The festival runs until Sunday and doors open at 11am.
