Snow removal budget over despite mild winter

Halifax’s snow removal budget is about $4 million over budget with more than $14 million spent, all this despite a mild winter.
Mayor Peter Kelly says the snow removal budget is being used for things other than snow removal.
“This area has become a catch-all in terms of other cost factors being put in place,” says Kelly. “As well for asphault patching, shouldering, litter pickup, sidewalk grinding.”
He says because of the lack of snow, more maintenance was done.
More than $2.3 million on equipment repair, and estimated $250,000 on curb and sidewalks and more than $45,000 hours patching pot holes.
“Some of our challenge is to make sure that we budget correctly so to make sure that we put it in the right program,” says Kelly. “So if it’s not a snow program and if it’s a winter works program, let’s be clear.”
He says there is a move to both increase the snow removal budget for next year and change what falls under the winter works and snow removal budgets.
