M-V Miner removal facing another setback

The head of Bennington Group says he’s had it with repeated delays holding up the planned removal of the M-V Miner off
Cape Breton.

Abe Shah says his New York-based company is walking away from the project on Scaterie Island.

Poor weather, theft of equipment and what Shah says is government red tape have delayed the start of work for months.

The latest setback came Friday, when the Nova Scotia Department of Labour issued a stop-work order pending a safety plan.

Shah says he’s frustrated after the plan by an independent engineer the company submitted, was rejected.

He says if the government wants Bennington Group to do the work, it will have to ask the company to come back.

The retired bulk carrier ran aground more than a year ago as it was being towed to Turkey to be scrapped.
