Halifax Explosion survivor dies at 101

One of the few remaining survivors of the Halifax Explosion has died.

George W. Sim died Sunday at the age of 101.

His death comes just over a month after he attended a ceremony that marked the explosion’s 95th anniversary.

On Dec. 6, 1917, a French ship carrying explosives collided with another ship in Halifax harbour, sparking a blast that killed more than 2,000 people – most of them in Halifax’s North End.

Sim was just six years old at the time and was eating his breakfast in his Artz Street home when he said the windows suddenly blew in.

According to his obituary in the Chronicle Herald, Sim went on to work for the Department of National Defence for 35 years.

His funeral service will take place tomorrow at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home on Windsor Street.
