HALIFAX – A Halifax Regional School Board member is calling for an end to 'racist and discriminatory' student behaviour.
District 7's Jennifer Raven said she has fielded multiple calls from concerned parents, saying their child has been a victim of some form of discrimination.
Last week, she tabled a motion asking for a report from the superintendent about the number of incidents that could be deemed 'racist or discriminatory'
According to Raven, the school board does not receive official reports on these kinds of incidents.
Instead, they are recorded in PowerSchool, but the data collected is not being analyzed, and thus, no action is taken.
On Wednesday, Raven told The Sheldon MacLeod Show she has heard multiple complaints from parents.
“I do hear a lot of anecdotes,” she said. “People call me with concerns and I hear stories from my own children in their schools in elementary and junior high.”
She said she's hopeful the report she has requested will be the 'baseline' in the fight to end racism in HRSB schools.
