The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that construction of the new South Park Street bicycle lanes, as well as the road and sidewalk renewal between Spring Garden Road and Sackville Street is now complete.

New one-way protected bicycle lanes have been installed on each side of the road and were designed to improve the comfort and safety of those cycling. The raised bicycle lanes are situated behind the curb and feature a decorative paver buffer to separate them from traffic lanes and on-street parking. They also include two-stage bicycle turn boxes at signalized intersections as well as intersection conflict markings.

Temporary curb extensions have also been installed at the intersection of South Park Street, Sackville Street and Bell Road to better designate space for people walking and cycling, shorten crossing distances and slow vehicle traffic.

Those using the bicycle lanes must always yield to those walking. Those walking, or rolling, must avoid entering the bike lane unless to cross.

Please note: Right-turn on red restrictions are now in place where South Park Street intersects with Sackville Street and Spring Garden Road. Signage has been installed to indicate where these restrictions have been implemented.

This route will eventually connect to other bikeways planned for University and Young avenues, Morris Street and Bell Road.

This is the second phase of implementing the South Park Street protected bicycle lanes, which was approved by Halifax Regional Council in March 2018. The first phase was installed in 2019 between Inglis Street and Spring Garden Road. This project also advances the Integrated Mobility Plan’s goal of creating a connected network of all-ages-and-abilities (AAA) bicycle routes in the Regional Centre. This project was funded in part by the provincial and federal governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
