Gas prices exceed $2 per litre, hitting record high in Nova Scotia

By CityNews Halifax Staff

After the province's utility and review board invoked their interrupter clause overnight, Nova Scotians are waking up to a record-high price of gas.

2.08 per litre is the new minimum price of gasoline in the Halifax area. That's up nearly 80 cents compared to this time last year.

The overnight price change did not affect the price of diesel, which remains at 245.8 cents per litre.

Prices have been spiking more recently as the reopening of the economy, and the start of the busy travel season, have led to high demand for gasoline that refiners have limited capacity to meet.

The record-high cost of fuel comes as oil giant Saudi Aramco recently surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable firm, at a market valuation of roughly $2.4 trillion.
