Council greenlights Dartmouth heritage home demolition

City Council has voted to allow a property owner to tear down a home in Dartmouth even though it has municipal heritage status.
The late Victorian home at 120 Ochterloney Street was built by Alexander Hutchinson in 1892.
The owner intends to develop the property.
Councillor Jennifer Watts was among those who voted to refuse the demolition permit in line with a recommendation from city staff and the Heritage Advisory Committee.
“I understand ….getting on, moving on with the downtown and moving forward,” says Watts. “But we put these policies in place specifically the way we have to protect that heritage value.”
The building lot is one of four that are being consolidated for future development at the corner of Ochterloney and Irishtown Road.
