Atlantic University Sport (AUS) announced a new partnership with the Jordan Boyd Foundation.
The foundation has donated 56 automated external defibrillators that will be deployed to 11 AUS member university athletic programs spanning the four Atlantic provinces.
According to a release from AUS, many young athletes have lost their lives to cardiac arrest. The AEDs will be available for use on athletes, staff members or spectators who suffer a cardiac event.
Although AEDs are available in many university buildings and facilities, this initiative will improve safety for athletes by providing portable devices that can stay close to teams and be accessible while travelling.
The Jordan Boyd Foundation was established in memory of Jordan Boyd, a junior hockey player from Bedford, N.S., who died of cardiac arrest during his first training camp in 2013.
