Blake, Phillips lift Mooseheads to shootout win over Cataractes

The Halifax Mooseheads were back in action Thursday night as they hosted the Shawinigan Cataractes in a goalie duel at Scotiabank Centre.

Shawinigan opened the scoring in the second period when Vince Elie took a pass from Félix Lacerte and fired a shot past the blocker of Owen Bresson.

It appeared the Cataractes had extended their lead to two when Cole Chandler forced a turnover and fed Dylan Laframboise, who found the back of the Mooseheads net. After a short review, the goal was called back for offside.

Caylen Blake tied the game for Halifax at 11:12 of the third period. Jasu Mensonen made the initial play, firing a puck that was blocked by a Shawinigan defender, before Blake recovered the loose puck and snapped it past Mathys Fernandez for his 10th of the season to force overtime.

After a scoreless extra frame, a nine‑round shootout was needed as the teams traded goals. Captain Owen Phillips was the hero for Halifax, beating Fernandez and securing the win.

With the victory, the Mooseheads improve to 23-22-3-2 on the season.

Bresson earned first star of the game for Halifax with 29 saves. Shawinigan netminder Fernandez was named second star with 31 saves, while the third star went to Phillips for his shootout winner.

Halifax is back in action Friday, Feb. 13, as they welcome the league‑best Moncton Wildcats to Scotiabank Centre.

Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Live coverage can be heard on 95.7 NewsRadio, with Garreth MacDonald hosting the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
